Kenyan darts player David Munyua is still getting used to playing with his new customised darts set.

“I am still learning its flight and feel of its shaft,” Munyua told Nation Sport in an exclusive interview.

Munyua revealed his customised darts set were made by his sponsors, Winmau, a Welsh manufacturer of dartboards and other darts equipment.

“They are called David Munyua darts set and they weigh 22 grams,” Munyua said, before adding that replicas of it will soon go on sale in Kenya and the United Kingdom.

“The replicas will weigh less,” Munyua said.

Munyua, a 30-year old veterinarian from Kabati in Murang’a County, took the world by storm in December 2025 when he defeated Belgian Mike De Decker, then ranked 18th in the world, 3-2 to win on his Professional Darts Corporation World Darts Championship debut. Munyua’s journey in the 2026 PDC World Darts Championship ended with a 3-0 loss to Dutchman Kevin Doets in the Second Round.

Munyua played the contests against de Decker and Doets using darts customised for English darts player Cam Crabtree.

“David Munyua has done better than me with my own darts,” Crabtree, who was eliminated in the First Round at the 2026 PDC World Darts Championship, joked on X after Munyua defeated de Decker.

“After appearing at the 2026 PDC World Darts Championship, I stopped training for some time because I was waiting for my new darts set to arrive. Now that I have a customised darts set, I have no excuses to make. If results do not go my way now, I just have to swallow it,” Munyua told Nation Sport.

Munyua is currently in Portsmouth, England, where he featured in the 12th week of the Modus Super Series from April 6-11.

The Modus Super Series, a successor to the Online Darts Live League which was launched in 2021, is a darts competition which is played over 13 weeks. Each week features 12 new players who compete from Monday to Friday for a slot in that week’s final which is staged on Saturday. After 12 weeks of competition, the twelve weekly winners compete in ‘Champions Week’ which is played every thirteenth game week to decide who will win the Series and earn the £25,000 (Sh4.35 million) first prize. Weekly winners, according to Munyua, win £7,000 (Sh1.28 million). There is no appearance fee, Munyua also said.

The competition is organised by Modus, an events and management company that represents many of the world’s top professional darts players.

Modus invited Munyua to feature in the 12th week of their current series after his performance at the 2026 PDC World Darts Championship impressed them.

“Manpreet Kalsi and Peter Wachiuri are the other Kenyans who have previously competed in the Modus Super Series,” Munyua said. “This time, I not only represented Kenya but I was also the only African competing in the event,” Munyua added.

Despite his best effort, Munyua did not qualify for his week’s final. He was eliminated in the group stages after winning five out of 25 contests.

Still, Munyua had a lot of positives to take from his performance.

“I have never played that many darts contests in a week. It was a very busy schedule which gave me good experience and exposure. The level of competition in that event is higher than what I am used to at home and Africa,” Munyua said.

“In terms of playing experience, I am very new to top level darts. Three years is not enough to say how good or bad I am,” Munyua added, before sharing the profiles of some of the players he competed against.

“Alex Spellman from America has been playing at this level for 15 years. Reece Colley has 10 years of experience. Dmitrii Rogov is also experienced. Jasper Scarrott is 51 years old and has been playing for many years. At my age, and where I am coming from, I still have a lot to learn,” Munyua, who started playing darts in 2022, said. Munyua was playing in his second competition this year. Following his appearance at the 2026 PDC World Darts Championships, Munyua took a break from playing until March when he suffered elimination in the Round of 16 during the African Continental Tour North 1 played in Nairobi in March.

“I took that break because I was waiting for my customised darts set to arrive. After they arrived, I resumed training and playing,” Munyua said. Munyua will remain in England until the end of April as he is set to feature in the Modus International Pairs 3 from April 20-26. He and his partner, compatriot Peter Wachiuri, will compete against opponents from England, Germany, Netherlands, Scotland, among other nations.

“I am waiting for my teammate Wachiuri to arrive,” Munyua said, before revealing that he and Wachiuri are catering for their flights tickets and accommodation.

“So far, as our sponsor, Winmau is providing us with darts equipment and giving us an allowance. We need to raise our game higher in order to get more in terms of sponsorship,” Munyua said.

Darts Orakel, an organisation with one of the largest darts databases in the world, ranks Munyua at position 1,392 worldwide out of a pool of over 10,000 players. Wachiuri is ranked at 1,459. After returning from England, Munyua looks forward to competing in the East Africa Darts Open and qualifiers for 2027 PDC World Darts Championships.
